GA4 vs Universal Analytics

May 27, 2025
Google didn’t upgrade Universal Analytics, it replaced it. And let’s be clear: GA4 isn’t β€œUA but better.” It’s an entirely different beast with new logic, new pain points, and a very different agenda. If you’re still treating GA4 like a newer version of what came before, you’re walking into a knife fight with a spoon.

The Philosophy Behind GA4

GA4 is event-driven. That’s the surface-level change, but the core philosophy is signal over structure.

Instead of tidy session buckets, you get a stream of contextless events. Instead of predefined reports, you’re expected to build your own views or export everything to BigQuery.

It’s not made for analysts.
It’s made for machine learning.

The shift is clear:

  • From sessions β†’ to events
  • From reporting β†’ to prediction
  • From user-friendly β†’ to data-scientist-ready

What Universal Analytics Got Right

UA wasn’t perfect , but it was usable.
You knew what a bounce was. You could click your way to insights. Clients understood what they were looking at.

Strengths:

  • Session-based reporting aligned with how marketers thought.
  • More intuitive funnels, goals, and ecommerce setup.
  • Out-of-the-box reports didn’t require a PhD in GA4 navigation.

It didn’t need a setup guide the size of a novella to start delivering value.

What GA4 Actually Improves

GA4 does solve problems UA couldn’t:

  • Cross-device tracking using blended identity stitching.
  • Predictive audiences based on ML signals.
  • Free BigQuery exports, finally bringing serious analysis to the masses.

But those wins come at a cost:
You trade clarity for capability.

The Pain: Why GA4 Hurts So Much

  1. Custom Events Overload – You’ll need to plan, name, and debug every key action manually. It’s flexibility with a side of pain.
  2. Thresholds and Sampling – Reports break without warning. Key metrics vanish. Your data has secrets.
  3. Reporting UI – Most reports are skeletal. Want anything meaningful? Build it yourself.
  4. Debugging Is a Grind – GA4’s debug mode is flaky, unreliable, and often the only way to know if your setup works.

GA4 didn’t just move your cheese, it threw it in a blender.

Strategic Shifts You Need to Make

This isn’t just a technical migration. It’s a strategic rewrite of how you handle analytics:

  • Funnels β†’ Must be rebuilt and redefined using Explorations.
  • Attribution β†’ Now model-based by default, which complicates things further.
  • Conversions β†’ Any event can be a conversion, which is powerful, but also dangerous if abused.
  • Reports β†’ Stop relying on GA4’s UI. Build your reporting stack (BigQuery + Looker Studio minimum).

If your team hasn’t rethought its approach to tracking, you’re not β€œmigrated”... you’re misled.

What to Do If You’re Stuck

  1. Rebuild Tracking From First Principles
Don’t just port UA events, re-map your user journeys with fresh eyes.
  2. Use BigQuery Early
It’s not optional. GA4’s native UI is too limited.
  3. Train the Business, Not Just the Analysts
Stakeholders are flying blind. Make the data digestible again.
  4. Monitor Your Schema Like a Hawk
Event names, parameter formats, and inconsistencies will kill your insights fast.

Conclusion: GA4 Isn’t an Upgrade... It’s a Transformation

Treating GA4 like it’s just UA with new clothes is a rookie mistake.

This is a full rebuild of how digital measurement works, from sessions to events, from dashboards to data lakes, from human-readable reports to AI-friendly signals.

GA4 isn’t easier. It’s not even friendlier. But it’s what we’ve got, and if you treat it right, it might just give you more power than UA ever could.
